News | 7 Reasons to get up off the couch and go for a run in spring

Spring is around the corner! The days are getting longer and the nights shorter and you can almost smell spring in the air! Most of us are still lazily waking up from our winter slumber, but now is actually the perfect time to get up and go for a run. The air is crisp and cool, so you’re not sweating like crazy, and it will give you a head-start on that perfect beach body.

Here are seven reasons why you should get your lazy bum up from the couch and out for a run:

The cold weather (and miserable rain in Cape Town) has put many of us in a solemn mood, especially in South Africa where we’re used to warm weather and doing things outside. Going for a run releases endorphins, one of the body’s feel-good hormones.

Get outside
In winter we tend to spend a lot of time indoors, so there’s something really special about the fresh spring air, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Going for a run will invigorate you and make you feel alive…without feeling like your face is frozen.

Clear your head
Running is a great way to clear your head, especially after a rough day at the office. The rhythm of your breathing, the sound of your steps, even the ex- haustion takes your mind off of things for a while. In fact, this also gives your brain a break and the opportunity to reorganize itself so you can think more clearly.

That after-run bath
There are few things more relaxing than that long, hot bath after a brisk run in the crisp spring air. Use this time as a form of meditation; close your eyes, relax every single muscle in your body, and focus on taking long, deep breaths. Just remember to use water sparingly; so don’t fill the bath to the brim. A nice hot shower is also great for relaxing your tired muscles.

A hearty meal
Exercise is good for your metabolism, meaning you’ll have a great big hole in your stomach that will need to be filled with a warm, hearty, nutritious meal – a spicy fish curry will do just fine. But it’s not only to warm you from the inside, a healthy, balanced meal is also good for keeping both body and mind in tip-top shape.

Fight the flab
We tend to eat more in winter, because our bodies need more fuel for energy to keep us warm. However, it’s so easy to continue our winter eating habits into spring, and before you know it you’ve picked up a couple of kilos. Going for regular runs will help keep the flab at bay so that you’re not dieting and exercising like crazy to fit into that swimsuit come summer. It will also make your body crave the healthy stuff.

Sleep like a rock
With such busy, stressful lives, we often go to bed with our heads still trying to solve the world’s problems, or our world’s problems at least, which often makes it hard to get a proper night’s sleep. A tired body will ensure you dose off quickly and wake up in the morning refreshed. Even if your legs are a little stiff the next morning, it’s a reminder that you actually did something. So get up, and go do it again!
